Race dogged Tubby's UK tenure, now he may be FREE at last!

I cannot help but see race in Tubby Smith's tenure and departure. When he first came to UK, it was his color (some liked the idea, others reacted NEGATIVELY to it!) that was the topic; then when he won his first championship, those who had problems with his color shut up. As soon as no new championships came along, all those color haters started grumbling. The WORST part of it was that the UK AD and co. started listening (instead of ignoring) these FOOLS. Tubby, being a SMART man, saw the unmistakable hop and the brooding-long-necked-postures of the gathering brood of these "VULTURES" and said "see ya". I would have done the same thing myself, while singing that old Negro spiritual "thank God Almighty, I'm FREE at last!!"

Update: Aside from my view that those who NEVER wanted "Tubby" at UK to begin with, helped nudge him out the door, comes this excellent post from a different albeit political perspective from Ronnie Ellis. Here are excerpts: I love college basketball, especially UK basketball, but I wonder what it says about my state when a coach with a 76 percent winning record decides he’s had enough of fans’ unrealistic demands and what it says when the public has higher expectations for its basketball coaches than its political leaders.
...
If only Kentucky voters were as demanding of their political leaders as they are of their basketball coaches, state government might get it right 76 percent of the time.

Update #2, 3/24 at !;15 PM: Here's the C-J's editorial on the Tubby story. Here are excerpts:
University of Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith's decision to transfer his classy act to Minnesota means that the choice to depart was his.
But there should be no doubt that a concerted effort was made to oust him.
There was UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart's tepid support and vow to review the season with Coach Smith. (You didn't hear such ambiguity from Louisville's Tom Jurich when there was silly unhappiness with Rick Pitino early in the season.)
There were the demands that Mr. Smith replace his assistants, as if any decent head coach is going to insist on less than full personal control over his own staff.
And, last but not least -- in fact, worst -- there was the incessant carping from noisy fanatics among UK supporters, occasionally tinged with racism, that insisted that Coach Smith had somehow failed to live up to the program's "tradition." On at least one occasion, a "for sale" sign was reportedly posted at the coach's house.
...
UK had better be prepared to try to achieve all that in what may be a very hostile national environment.
Anyone who doubts that should watch the espn.com video of Dick Vitale's tirade (there will be similar comments in other outlets) about the shabby treatment of a coach with Mr. Smith's record, including coach of the year awards and a national championship.
Mr. Vitale didn't mention race, but one suspects it may occur to African-American athletes whom the new coaching staff want to entice to UK.

Update #3: Watch as Tubby Smith starts "feeling the [Gopher] love," and UK advertises for a new coach!

Yeah,go ahead and use race as an excuse for a poor performance on the basketball court. Anytime something goes wrong with a black man then they throw out the race card. Why don't you applaud Kentucky for being the first historic basketball program to hire a black man. He lasted 10 years therefor your argument holds no water so please, shut up about racism.

Thanks. Telling someone to shut up while you are commenting ANONYMOUSLY is rather BRAVE, don't you think? Like I said the AD should NOT have been listening to "fans" who wanted him GONE since the first time he landed in KY. I don't mind giving KY credit for hiring him IN SPITE of his race, and he should probably have moved on sooner, but MANY in opposition used race as a reason to poo-pooed his hiring and hounded him endlessly! Were you one of them?

I couldn't agree more, as you're aware. Glad I found your site.

Thanks. I'm glad to hear someone else sees it my way. There were folks, not everybody, but many around here who wanted his head on a platter from the get go. Unfortunately, these folks (who are mostly not even UK fans but those who had another agenda) drowned out the voices of reason, sending a message to TUBBY (who had extraordinary stats as Coach) that he could NOT ignore. So he went where he felt wanted! I say GOOD for him!!

Leave it to Joel Pett to bring the issue to deserved light.

Osi,
I have to completely disagree with you on this one. In Kentucky Basketball, it's all about winning. Tubby was paid in excess of 2 million dollars a year to take this program to national championships. He didn't perform to the standards demanded by the UK Basketball community at large.

From all indications, Tubby and his wife are WONDERFUL people. Tubby is a GOOD coach. Tubby didn't meet the expectations of the Kentucky Basketball Community state wide. Tubby was given a good ten year run. He was paid very well for his time. I'm glad that he has moved on to a better situation for himself, his family, and his staff. I wish him well.

No, race has no foothold here. It has no foothold in his hiring, in his performance, or in his departure. This is one area, one arena, where everyone can be proud that race doesn't matter. The only thing that matters in Kentucky Basketball is performance. If you perform to standard...you are elevated to almost God-Like Status...if you don't perform to expectation (some allowances are given) but eventually a new God-Like will be found to replace you.

No sir, Osi my dear friend...you are wrong on this one.

Derek, I have NEVER assumed to ALWAYS be right. Since you mentioned GOD, I'll like to tell you that GOD is the ONLY one who is ALWAYS RIGHT! I think many of you miss the point of my post. The point is that there were (and ARE) many who put his race in issue right from the get go. This race issue abated when he won BIG and when he took UK to the final 4, but soon resumed after he didn't make it back again. Racist epithets (and WORSE) were hurled at him right and left, and ALL I'm saying is that some of this created an atmosphere (with these "vultures" circling) that he would have been a FOOL if he had NOT left (maybe, he should have left SOONER). But like the empty barrel which makes the MOST noise (and is heard the MOST), those who ranted about his race were heard, when they should have been IGNORED. Tubby, no fool mind you, figured it out when even the AD would NOT give him the CONCRETE assurances to make him feel supported and needed. So he went to a place where "he felt the love" -- Tubby's words, NOT mine. Maybe, like you say, the fans have overblown expectations (which like Ronnie Ellis CORRECTLY observed is rather misplaced, since they should have those same LOFTY expectations for their government!), but I CANNOT IGNORE the race aspect of the whole rather SORDID affair. Even John Clay, the sports writer at the H-L, and the guys at ESPN complain that Tubby "deserved BETTER." Race is a part of the discussion and I understand many people (NOT you, Derek) like to pretend it DOESN'T exist, but I opt to differ and to call it as I see it!! I applaud UK for hiring a Black man in Coach Tubby (and thereby fulfilling its social racial obligation to the world) and I hope UK wins championships from now on; but ANYONE who is being recruited to coach the 'Cats better be WARNED that ONLY championships matter and ADVISED NOT to sell the home they vacate to come here to coach -- because their coaching career won't last long WITHOUT championships GOTTEN AT ANY AND ALL COSTS!!!

I agree with much of what you have stated. Certainly there may always exist racists and aggravaters. In the end I still contend that race did not matter in this case. But you are quite right in your final statements:

"ANYONE who is being recruited to coach the 'Cats better be WARNED that ONLY championships matter and ADVISED NOT to sell the home they vacate to come here to coach -- because their coaching career won't last long WITHOUT championships GOTTEN AT ANY AND ALL COSTS!!!" Truer words were never written.

Cheryl Truman also has a good post on UK and so does John Clay. But maybe, UK AD Mitch Barnhart is the one that needs ousting.

I wouldn't disagree with you there...nor would most other hard core UK fans...Barnhart should go. I have heard that sentiment being echoed for years.

I say, why should color or race be brought into this discussion? It was obvious Tubby has not been happy here for awhile. Look at the past games. If he was not happy here in Kentucky than by all means go where he will be happy and paid alot.Kentucky Fans are the Best and we will survive!

I found this about how Minnesota got Tubby.

Why don't you aknowledge that Tubby also, owns every losing record at Kentucky? Why don't you aknowledge that he didn't put an effort into recruiting anymore? Why don't you aknowledge that he betrayed the fan base by preparing a deal with Minnesota for 6 weeks when the season was still going on? Why don't you hold him accountable to meet the expectations given to him? If a company hires me and I'm not meeting their goals and my performance has declined the last two years do you think they would let me keep my job? No...so why is it any different with him?

I do NOT believe Tubby was speaking to the Gophers 6 weeks ago, as you claim. It was reported it was his Lawyer who was doing so and Tubby was unaware of it. I still believe for a lot of fans out there (maybe not you), his race was the issue! Thanks for your insightful comment.
