Beshear Announces Secretary of Transportation
FRANKFORT, KY (November 16, 2007) - Governor-elect Steve Beshear today announced that Joseph W. "Joe" Prather, of Elizabethtown, will serve as Secretary of the Transportation Cabinet in the Beshear/Mongiardo Administration.
Prather, age 67, served three terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, beginning in 1967. He was elected to the Kentucky State Senate in 1973, elected President Pro Tempore in 1976 and served 11 years through the end of 1986. Prather also served as Chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party and was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1983-1984. During the first year of Brereton Jones Administration, from December of 1991 to December of 1992, Prather served as Secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet.
In the private sector, Prather has been a realtor, auctioneer and is former Chairman of the Board of the Hardin County Bank and Trust and Farmers Deposit Bank.
"The Transportation Cabinet has had its share of difficulties over the past few years," said Beshear. "Joe's wealth of experience in both the public and private sectors and his high moral and ethical standards will assure that the Cabinet will be operated in an efficient, businesslike and principled manner which will serve the people of Kentucky well."
Joe Prather attended the University of Louisville, is married to the former Jennie Brown of Hodgenville and has five children.
