FULL DAY OF FESTIVITIES PLANNED FOR INAUGURATION
Event to embrace Kentuckians from all walks of life
FRANKFORT, KY (December 3, 2007) -- Inauguration 2007 is December 11th in Frankfort and is designed to be "the people's party" where from Kentuckians throughout the Commonwealth can come together to celebrate the beginning of the new administration of Governor-Elect Steve Beshear and Lt. Governor-Elect Daniel Mongiardo. A full day of public events is scheduled, from a parade to the swearing-in ceremony, a reception, and three simultaneous evening balls. All events are free.
"This inauguration will set the tone for my administration," Governor-Elect Beshear said. "It will be inclusive and appeal to Kentuckians from all communities, all political affiliations and all walks of life. It will be reflective of the values that my administration."
Governor-Elect Beshear and Lt.-Governor-Elect Mongiardo will officially take office at midnight when they are sworn into office in a private ceremony at the Executive Mansion. Governor-Elect Beshear will take the oath first. He will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham. Court of Appeals Justice Sara Walter Combs will administer the oath of office to Lt. Gov-elect Mongiardo.
In taking the oath of office, both men will swear to support the U.S. and state constitutions and will affirm that they have not fought a duel with deadly weapons nor acted as a second in such a duel.
Governor Beshear and Lt. Governor Mongiardo and their families will attend a private church service from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in downtown Frankfort. Lt. Governor Mongiardo's cousin Josephine Mongiardo will sing the Lord's Prayer during the observance.
The public inaugural festivities will start with a colorful parade that will begin at 10 a.m. in downtown Frankfort and end at the Capitol.
In a nod to the state's status as the horse capital of the world, the parade will feature more than 25 horse units including more than 150 horses, the most in modern history. Horse-drawn vehicles will carry dignitaries along the parade route. Governor-Elect Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear will ride in a green and gold "vis-Ã -vis" carriage provided by the Kentucky Horse Park. Other dignitaries will include inauguration co-chairs Wade and Alice Houston of Louisville, and Tracy and Carol Farmer of Midway. 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel of Louisville will serve as Grand Marshal.
Numerous horse-related organizations and many breeds will be represented in the parade. Eighty marching bands from across the state will also participate.
The parade will last about two and a half hours, and then at 2 p.m., the ceremonial public swearing-in of Governor Beshear and Lt. Governor Mongiardo will take place at the Capitol.
At the public swearing-in, Governor Beshear will be sworn into office by Supreme Court Justice Mary C. Noble. The governor then will deliver his inaugural speech.
Lt. Governor Mongiardo will be sworn in once again by Court of Appeals Justice Sara Combs. This will mark the first time that women have administered the oath of office to the governor and lieutenant governor.
The ceremony will be accompanied by a 21-gun salute and a fly over by military aircraft.
After the swearing-in, the festivities shift to the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort. From 4 to 5:30 p.m., the residents of Frankfort will host a reception for visitors.
Entertainment will be provided by the Hazard Community College Bluegrass Music School with Bobby Osborne of the Osborne Brothers, the First United Methodist Church of Frankfort Madrigal Singers, Western Hills High School of Frankfort's Chorale, and the Franklin County High School Chorus, among other performers.
The history center will be open throughout the day, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the center's fascinating permanent exhibit, A Kentucky Journey. The Kentucky Historical Society's latest exhibit, Our New Kentucky Home: Immigrant Experiences, also will be on display.
As evening falls, the scene will be set for three gala balls in the Capitol area. Each is free and open to the public, running from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
The Grand March, a tradition dating to the mid 19th century, is visual experience not to be missed. This will be the 24th Grand March, during which the newly elected constitutional officers and their partners will be formally introduced to the public and kick off the evening's entertainment. The event will take place in the Capitol Rotunda, which will be decorated for the holiday season with thousands of lights and greenery.
Governor Beshear, Lt. Governor Mongiardo, and all other constitutional officers and their partners will descend one couple at a time from the third floor of the Capitol to the Rotunda. Once all have reached the Rotunda, the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, led by retiring conductor George Zack, will play, with Governor and Mrs. Beshear having the first dance. Joanna Mongiardo, noted opera singer and cousin of Lt. Governor Mongiardo will perform.
Once the Grand March is concluded, the inaugural celebrants will make their way to the three balls taking place in tents around the Capitol. The Capitol Ball, situated in a tent behind the Capitol, will feature the Jerry Tolson Orchestra playing big band tunes.
The Governor's Ball, taking place in a tent near the Executive Mansion, will host oldies groups The Trendells and The Torques.
The largest of the gala dances will be The Kentucky Ball, in a tent next to the Capitol Annex. National recording artists Exile of Richmond, Ky. will entertain. The Kentucky Ball will be decorated in an equine theme that calls attention to the state's rich equine history and its hosting of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park. Kentucky products featured in the Kentucky Proud agricultural program will be highlighted.
For all three dances, dress is black tie optional.
At 10 p.m., celebrants will be entertained by a fireworks display near the Capitol produced by the famed Zambelli Internationale.
For daytime activities, a free shuttle service operating from the Human Resources Building at 275 E. Main St. will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For the evening functions, shuttles will run from 7 p.m. until 12:30 a.m . from the Juniper Hill Park parking lot. Shuttle service also will be provided from the Capital Plaza area downtown to the Capitol during the same hours.
