RPK Chairman Accuses Jack Conway of Political Cover-Up
FRANKFORT – Today, Republican Party of Kentucky Chairman Steve Robertson confirmed that Attorney General Jack Conway is investigating State Senator Joey Pendleton’s questionable employment record at Murray State University (MSU).
“The day after the election Jack Conway’s office finally confirmed what we had suspected all along…which is that Joey Pendleton may have cheated MSU out of thousands of taxpayer dollars,” said Robertson.
The facts are troubling:
• In April, an MSU Regent was so concerned with Pendleton's double-billing both Murray State and state government that he wrote a letter to Conway asking for an investigation.
• In August, Jack Conway’s name appeared on a fundraising invitation for Pendleton’s re-election campaign.
• On October 20th, Robertson submitted an Open Records Request to Conway’s office asking for all documents related to Pendleton’s employment at MSU and asking for the appointment of an independent prosecutor to investigate the matter.
• On October 23rd, Conway’s office responded by refusing to provide these documents, stating they were “preliminary correspondence” and failing to acknowledge Robertson’s request for an independent investigation.
• On October 30th, Robertson sent another Open Records Request to Conway’s office, asking for the same documents and bringing to light Conway’s involvement in Pendleton’s campaign.
• The day after the election, November 5th, Conway’s office finally confirmed it is investigating Joey Pendleton but still refused to provide documents, this time adding that “the disclosure of the information may harm this agency by revealing the identity of informants not otherwise known” and “may harm the ongoing investigation currently being conducted by this agency by possibly exposing informants, whistleblowers and witnesses to threats, intimidation and harm by persons or entities that are being investigated.”
“The most troubling aspect of this situation is that Jack Conway had one story before the election and another story after the election,” concluded Robertson. “It is a shame that this state’s chief law enforcement officer engaged in a political cover-up and hid the truth from the voters of Kentucky.”
