Businessman Greg Fischer will run for mayor in 2010
By Joseph Gerth
Louisville businessman Greg Fischer became the first to say he will run for mayor in 2010, announcing Monday that he plans to file a letter of intent with the state Registry of Election Finance.
"Louisville is at a crossroads as we consider new directions for the 21st century," said Fischer, a Democrat. "Not only are my sights set on creating an open and diverse culture within metro government, but I feel the time has clearly come to unleash the potential of one of the most unique cities in America. We must find new ways to harness Louisville's energy."
Getting into the race now allows Fischer to gather support and money early for a potential primary, before other campaigns get organized.
Metro Council President David Tandy, council member Jim King and businessman Tyler Allen have all said they are considering running in the Democratic primary.
Attorney Steve Pence could be the most likely Republican to run, and Metro Council member Kelly Downard, who ran against Mayor Jerry Abramson in 2006, said he hasn't ruled out a campaign.
Editor's comment: Steve Pence will make an excellent candidate and Mayour.
