"Nigeria Orders Strict Security Screening (SSS) At All Airports". Laugh With Me, If You Can.
Nigeria orders strict security screening at all airports
The Nigerian government has ordered a 100 percent security screening at all airports in the country.
The directive came after the arrest of a Nigerian, who traveled out of the country through the Lagos Murtala Muhammad International Airport and was involved in attempt to bomb a US airliner.
The Nigerian, Umar Abdulmutallab, 23, was arrested on Christmas Day in the United States for detonating an explosive aboard the flight, which he boarded at Amsterdam.
Babatunde Omotoba, the country's minister of aviation disclosed this to reporters in Abuja on Saturday.
"The government is concerned about the incident and has set up a committee to investigate it," he said.
The minister said the country is willing to assist in any investigation that will unravel the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident.
"I will like to assure all Nigerians, the traveling public and the international community that air transportation is safe and secure in Nigeria," he assured.
Omotoba said the Nigerian Airport Security Committee has been meeting, noting that a detailed investigating report would soon be released by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The Nigerian embassy in the US has said it is cooperating with relevant security authorities on the Northwest airline incident involving a Nigerian citizen.
The message was contained in a statement on Sunday from the Nigerian embassy in the US capital. The statement said some of its officers have gone to Michigan to gain consular access to the suspect.
It also said the mission would offer the necessary cooperation to all US federal and local authorities investigating the matter.
"Similarly, the embassy is in constant touch with the minister of foreign affairs in Abuja who would soon issue a more comprehensive statement on the matter after a meeting of the inter-agency committee to handle the issue," the statement added.
