FYI: Voting Right Rally Thursday, March 4, 1 p.m., Capitol Rotunda.

MEDIA ADVISORY

People who want to vote but can't and their supporters will rally at the State Capitol on Thursday, March 4 at 1 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda to urge passage of House Bill 70. The bill has already passed the House overwhelmingly (83-16), as it has in past years, but again is stuck in the Senate State and Local Government Committee.

HB 70 – a proposed constitutional amendment – if approved by voters would grant automatic restoration of voting rights to former felons upon completion of their debt to society. This affects 186,000 Kentuckians. Only one other state has laws as restrictive as Kentucky's when it comes to allowing former felons to vote.

A broad coalition of religious, civic, labor and civil rights organizations support Voting Rights Restoration (list below).

Speakers at the 1 p.m. rally are former felons and family members of former felons from across the state who will tell their personal stories. Rep. Jesse Crenshaw of Lexington, sponsor of HB 70 will also speak, and the Down By The Wayside gospel choir will perform.
