Poll: Conway gains on Mongiardo, Paul keeps big lead on Grayson

FRANKFORT – Attorney General Jack Conway is closing in on Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo in the Democratic race for U.S. Senate, says a Survey USA poll released Monday.

Meanwhile, Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul still holds a strong lead over Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the Republican contest, the poll of likely voters shows.

With five weeks to go before the May 18 primary elections, the poll, sponsored by The Courier-Journal and WHAS-TV in Louisville, showed Mongiardo ahead of Conway 35 to 32 percent with 19 percent undecided and Paul outdistancing Grayson 45 to 30 percent with 21 percent undecided.

The poll in March showed Mongiardo with a 45-27 lead over Conway, and Paul, son of U.S. Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, ahead of Grayson 42-27 percent.

The latest poll questioned 659 Democrats and 446 Republican likely to vote May 18.
Margin of error for the Democratic poll was 3.9 percentage points. It was 4.7 percentage points for the GOP poll.

The poll showed the two Democrats with big leads in their home areas.

Conway leads in Louisville by 22 percentage points, while Mongiardo, a Hazard ear, nose and throat surgeon, outpaces Conway by 33 percentage points in Eastern Kentucky.

Conway’s press secretary, Allison Haley, said in a statement that the most important poll is the one on Election Day but that Monday’s poll “shows that our campaign has all the momentum in this race and that Jack’s message of creating jobs, reducing the deficit and bringing accountability to Washington is resonating with voters across Kentucky.”

Mongiardo campaign spokesman Kim Geveden said in a statement, “Despite Jack Conway having the airwaves to himself for the past month and spending almost $500,000 on TV ads, this poll confirms that Daniel Mongiardo still leads Jack Conway.

“We remain very confident that as our extensive grassroots effort gets under way and we begin competing on the airwaves, Daniel’s authenticity and his message of fighting for Kentucky’s working families will resonate with voters.”

Paul’s campaign manager, David Adams, said Paul’s “strong performance across the state reflects his solid support of issues important to Kentuckians like balanced budgets, private sector job creation, strong national defense and term limits.

“Republicans in Kentucky know a real conservative when they see one and they recognize the urgent need to elect a no-nonsense leader like Rand Paul to restore faith in our nation.”

Grayson’s campaign manager, Nate Hodson, expressed doubt about the accuracy of the poll.

He said in a statement, “If automated polls determined the outcome of campaigns then Bruce Lunsford or Steve Henry would be governor, not Steve Beshear, according to this poll at the same point in the 2007 primary.

“The automated interviewing technology they use is problematic and inaccurate compared to traditional polls conducted by live professional interviewers.” ...

Editor's comment: the poll result is bad news for Trey, who must find ways to quickly convince undecideds that he is their man. So far, his political ads are not working, and Rand Paul's "bailout" ad hit the mark, with still no adequate response from Trey -- note: both Rand and Trey gained three points, according to the poll.

On the Democrat side, it shows Jack Conway's bullshit ads are working -- he gained 10 points lost by Mongiardo, but that is most likely because Dan Mongiardo is so far deafeningly silent on the airwaves.
