Following a weekend arrest for driving under the influence on federal property, Daily News Managing Editor Mike Alexieff has resigned.

Alexieff, 50, was arrested Saturday evening by a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officer and cited for stopping, standing or parking on a limited access highway, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle and failure to maintain control of a vehicle.

The incident happened on federal property on Mammoth Cave Parkway. Alexieff was taken Saturday to Barren County Regional Jail and released Sunday. His first court appearance has not been set.

“Mike tendered his resignation this morning and I accepted it,” Publisher Pipes Gaines said. “We appreciated the contributions that Mike made to the Daily News during his tenure here, including two first-place awards for general excellence in the Kentucky Press Association.”

Alexieff, who started at the Daily News in 2001, took a tough stance on publishing the DUI’s of public officials.

In 2006, the Daily News received considerable criticism regarding publishing the DUI of a former sheriff’s deputy whose family had suffered tragedy.

In an editorial, Alexieff justified the publication, saying:

“Driving under the influence is the leading cause of fatal accidents on Kentucky roads.”

Alexieff said that public officials should be held to a higher standard.

“And yes, if I get a DUI, you can be assured an article about it will be in the newspaper,” he wrote.

Alexieff’s resignation was effective immediately.
