(Frankfort, KY) Candidates who want to run as an independent candidate or political group candidate for partisan offices, who want to file for non-partisan races that do not have primary elections, and who want to seek an office with a recent vacancy, are facing a deadline of August 10, 2010 to have their filing papers and fees filed with the appropriate filing office.
“I would encourage all interested and eligible citizens to get their required paperwork into our office as soon as possible, if they are interested in running for one of these offices,” noted Grayson.
Candidates that file with the Secretary of State must do so by no later than 4:00 p.m., EDT, for placement on the 2010 general election ballot. Candidates for offices that file with the local county clerk will have until 4:00 p.m. local time to complete their filings. If candidates choose to mail their filing papers, the documents must still be received in the appropriate office by 4:00 p.m. local time on the 10th, and thus, candidates are asked to plan accordingly.
In order for a filing petition to be accepted in many races, candidates must have filed a statement of candidacy with the respective filing officer by the April 1, 2010 deadline. Candidates who file for federal offices, nonpartisan offices, and partisan city offices in cities of the second to sixth class are exempt from filing the Statement of Candidacy.
The Office of the Secretary of State has received notification from the Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court of an additional vacancy in office in the following Kenton County judicial circuit:
Circuit Judge
“Family Court”
16th Judicial Circuit
5th Division
“Candidates would be wise to file prior to the deadline date and time, in the event their documents are not acceptable for filing,” stated Mary Sue Helm, election administrator for the Secretary of State. “There is no opportunity for correction of documents after that date and time.”
