Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear chief of staff to resign

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Steve Beshear on Wednesday announced that Chief of Staff Adam Edelen is resigning effective Sept. 15.
Edelen, 35, of Lexington, plans to take a job in the private sector, although he said Wednesday that he might have an announcement to make about a run for office after his departure.
“Public service is certainly my life’s passion,” he said after a meeting with the governor’s staff. “While I anticipate having other statements to make about those passions I won't be doing it while on the Beshear payroll.”
Edelen, who has served as chief of staff since July 2008, will be replaced by chief legislative liaison Mike Haydon, 60, of Springfield.
Beshear said Wednesday that Edelen has done an outstanding job as chief of staff.
“It was totally (Edelen’s) decision,” Beshear said. “I’d keep him here as long as I’m here if I had my way about it.”
Of Edelen’s successor, Beshear said Haydon has a “wealth of experience in government that’s going to hold him in good stead as he takes this job on.”
Haydon has spent more than 30 years in public service, including as chief of staff for House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, deputy secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet under former Gov. Paul Patton, secretary of the Revenue Cabinet and commissioner of the Department of Property Valuation.
He also formerly served as mayor of Springfield.
Haydon said he doesn’t plan to make any changes in the short term.
“It’s a new opportunity to serve in an administration that I think really committed to the well being of the people of Kentucky,” he said. “Gov. Beshear has demonstrated that through his day-to-day stewardship through these turbulent economic times we've had.”
Haydon, who currently makes $100,748, will receive a raise bringing him up to Edelen's salary of $124,091, Beshear spokeswoman Kerri Richardson said.
Beshear, however, will not replace Haydon as chief legislative liaison; Haydon will continue to serve in that role as well.
Richardson also said the new salary does not yet reflect a 10 percent pay cut high-ranking Beshear officials will have to take this year.
