Congratulations to winners of 2010 election
By the Daily News

Despite one’s political persuasions, Americans witnessed an exciting election Tuesday night that saw Republicans make huge wins across the country.

Predictions ran high in the days before the election that the Republicans would likely take control of the House of Representatives and that there was a chance they could also take control in the Senate.

The Republicans overwhelmingly took back the House with up to 60 gains from Democratic seats. This is the largest swing of parties since 1948, the next closest being in 1994, with the Republican takeover under then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Republicans also gained six seats in the U.S. Senate. Sen.-elect Rand Paul, R-Ky., was a winner, but not a GOP pickup as he was replacing Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky. In three races, Washington, Colorado and Alaska are still counting ballots and we may not know the outcome in those tight races for some time.

A majority of governorships in the country were also won by Republicans on Tuesday; many were ones that incumbent Democrats were trying to hold on to.

The voters’ message was that the majority of Americans do not like the way this country is going and they wanted new blood in our nation’s capital to stop Mr. Obama’s radical agenda.

Mr. Obama, whose own Senate seat was captured by a Republican, needs to accept reality. The voters were tired of him and his colleagues running roughshod over the American public.

Shortly before the election, Mr. Obama said he wanted to work in a bipartisan manner if the Republicans made substantial gains. Well, they have done that and it is time for Obama to see the light and reach across the aisle to get this country moving forward again.

Time will only tell if he will do that.

This race was substantial because it wasn’t just red states electing Republicans to office; many were deep blue states that Obama and his colleagues easily carried in 2008.

The people in these states saw arrogance. They heard House Speaker Nancy Pelosi say we will pass the health care bill and then we will see what is in it. They saw this health care bill rammed down their throats.

The message last evening was loud and clear - the American people fear where this country is going and they wanted people out who had gone against their wishes and they wanted people in office who would actually listen to them.

Mr. Obama must reach his hand out to Republicans and as soon-to-be House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said, his party would also reach out to work with the president.

We hope both sides will work together for the betterment of this country.

We would also like to congratulate those who won federal races, statewide races and local races in the state last night as well. Their opponents are to be commended for running good campaigns as well.

Now that the election is over, let’s hope there will be a new spirit in Congress and things will actually get done that Americans want, not just what a particular party wants.
