FRANKFORT — The full Senate is set to vote on an immigration bill that would make it a state crime for an illegal immigrant to set foot in Kentucky.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted 8-3 to approve Senate Bill 6, which would allow local police to determine someone's immigration status and largely mirrors a controversial Arizona immigration law.
Sen. Tom Jensen, R-London, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the full Senate probably won't take up the bill before Friday.
The vote came after a more than hourlong debate. Three Senate Democrats — Robin Webb, Perry Clark and Jerry Rhoads — voted against the bill, saying they had concerns about how much the proposal would cost local jails, state prisons and law enforcement agencies.
Clark said he thought the only reason the Senate was considering the bill was because of politics.
"It will do nothing," he said of the law. "It's a terrible law."
Those who testified in favor of the law said the state already is paying too much to treat illegal immigrants in hospital emergency rooms and to educate their children.
