Comments On Obama, Me Were Plain Racist.

Comments on Obama, me were plain racist

After listening to Mike Huckabee lie about President Barack Obama “living in Kenya with his father and grandfather and hating America,” I feel compelled to condemn this form of covert racism.

It is true many despise our president because of his skin color. I don’t know if Huckabee is one of them; I do know he’s another political opportunist of the worst kind. Insisting the president is a Kenyan and un-American, while conveniently failing to mention his mother is a white Kansan, is designed for maximum racist effect.

People like Huckabee use race as a dagger to maim others, and mentioning one’s African ancestry seems to do the trick. As a Christian, he should know better than to bear false witness against his neighbor.

I, too, faced similar race daggering.

While I was running for office, a former elected Bowling Green official was making calls on behalf of my opponent, telling voters not to vote for me because I was not a real American, but African.

I have since wondered who is a real American. Apparently, that means no apparent connection to Africa.

Though our Constitution commands otherwise, showing no preference for color or ancestry: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States … are citizens of the United States …”, to some, that command mustn’t include those who have African blood.

Images of Africa must do something awful to some people, that Africa is an accepted hate code word. Recently, a letter writer to the Daily News responded to my letter and suggested that I came to America in the cold from Africa with only a shirt on my back.

I guess the president and I should count ourselves lucky no one has yet suggested we came to America naked, like “Tarzan’s” Africans.
