Lexington Courier Journal Says "It's Time [For People Like Hank Williams] To Knock It Off" With The Hitler Slur. We Couldn't AGREE More!
Editorial | Hank Williams Jr. and the Hitler slur
Are you ready for some Hitler hyperbole?
Apparently country singer Hank Williams Jr. was — only it played and laid like cow flop, even on the Fox News program on which he uttered it.
“It’d be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu,” Mr. Williams said Monday morning of President Obama’s golf outing with House Speaker John Boehner.
The Hitler comparison got the singer’s “Monday Night Football” intro yanked by ESPN, which said it was “disappointed” with his comments. The suspension angered some of Mr. Williams’ fans. Mr. Williams insisted he respected the office of the president, even as he averred “they’re the enemy” of President Obama and Vice President Biden.
All of which brings one subject into crystal focus: the Hitler hyperbole. It’s time to give it a rest.
Adolf Hitler was a monster who was responsible for the bloodiest war in history, the Holocaust that killed 6 million Jews and unimaginable misery. The evil of his virulent racism and his militarism have permanently stained the history of humanity; his destructive force is without parallel.
There is virtually nothing comparable to his legacy, yet for some reason he serves as a quick and easy reach for people — on the right and on the left — who wish to smear others with this most toxic of taints. That is lazy and abhorrent thinking, and it says more about them than it does their targets.
There was only one Hitler, and he is, mercifully, dead. Evoking him now in political discussions not only cheapens the discourse, it dishonors the memory of his millions of victims. It’s time to knock it off.
