LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- State employees have given nearly $850,000 to the re-election campaign of Gov. Steve Beshear, an analysis of campaign finance records by The Courier-Journal shows (http://bit.ly/oDMpPQ ).
His Republican opponent, Senate President David Williams, has received no more than $35,000 from state workers, though campaign reports omit listing the employer of many of his contributors.
The Kentucky Republican Party has claimed that the administration illegally targets state workers for contributions.
Beshear campaign spokesman Matt Erwin has said the complaints are a political stunt based on gossip.
On Thursday, the administration acknowledged that Finance Secretary Lori Flanery used her state email account send invitations to a Beshear fundraiser.
The administration says it was an honest mistake, but Williams says it is part of a pattern of questionable solicitations. The fundraiser was canceled.
