Western Kentucky fires Cowles as women's coach

Western Kentucky University has fired Mary Taylor Cowles as women’s basketball coach, athletic director Ross Bjork announced in a statement. WKU (9-21, 5-11) suffered one of its worst seasons, which ended with a 65-57 loss to Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt tournament quarterfinals.

“Moving forward, we must restore confidence, public support and the energy back to our basketball program,” Bjork said in a statement. “Everyone associated with Lady Topper basketball understands the expectations are to compete for and win championships and our program has much to offer to the game of women’s basketball.”

Cowles had been in charge at her alma mater since 2002. She guided the Lady Toppers to the NCAA tournament in 2003 and 2008. But the program has had back-to-back losing seasons. Cowles went 199-119 at WKU.
