David Hawpe: Straight talk from star of 'Pillow Talk'; The "Doris Day"ing of politicians.

The C-J's David Hawpe has an interesting take on politics (and those who practice the craft -- notice that I said practice). I call it the "Doris Day"ing of politicians. I guess I do NOT know much about Doris Day (sorry David), but here are excerpts from David's piece:

Authenticity is compelling, even in the cynical world of politics. At one point, George Bush seemed to have it -- before time and events revealed him as a fraud of historic proportion.

Ernie Fletcher seemed to have it, before time and events revealed that his promise of political reform was a fraud. Anne Northup still seems to have it; she's really as tough as she seemed in those brutal congressional races. Billy Harper has it, perhaps because he has nothing to lose by being himself in the current gubernatorial race.

Among the Democrats, Speaker Jody Richards comes across as an authentically nice guy; unfortunately for him, there's no showing that nice guys can govern Kentucky effectively (Ned Breathitt excepted). Bruce Lunsford is spending massively on TV commercials, carefully crafted to promote the notion that he's genuine.

Steve Henry could spend the Fort Knox bullion reserve on TV and not overcome his credibility problem. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the public will decide that Steve Beshear or Jonathan Miller is the authentic progressive.

As for Otis Hensley, I know next to nothing about him. But this much I do know about Gatewood Galbraith: He's the real thing.

Agree or disagree? Give us your thoughts.
