From Louisville The Courier Journal: Archbishop Praises Anti-Klan Ruling. Amen.
Archbishop praises anti-Klan ruling
Every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. Seeking always to promote a culture of life, we proclaim a consistent life ethic because God's image can never be taken from any person.
Recognizing that the divine spark in all people is greatly diminished by the sin of racism, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written that racism is "a sin that divides the human family, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father. … It is the sin that mocks the words of Jesus: 'Treat others the way you would have them treat you.' " (Brothers and Sisters To Us)
Because of the damage that this evil does to individuals and communities, it is vital that we continue to fight it in every way possible. That is why the decision of the Meade County jury to award damages to Jordan Gruver for the hateful and violent attack by the Ku Klux Klan in 2006 is so important. All of us must work together to resist this injustice and let organizations like the KKK know that this type of violence is not to be tolerated, while we continue our efforts to eradicate racism in our churches, neighborhoods and communities.
