More Karen Sypher In The News: Rick Pitino Never Told Her To Have An Abortion, But She Keeps Spewing Out LIES.
Rick Pitino's lawyer says he didn't force Sypher to get abortion
By Andrew Wolfson
The attorney for University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says Karen Sypher's claims that he forced her to have an abortion in 2003 are a “complete fabrication.”
Pence cited voice mail messages recorded by Sypher in which Pitino said the decision on whether to have the procedure “has to be your call.” In the message, Pitino, without mentioning the word abortion said: “It's a woman's choice.”
Pence was not immediately available for comment, but he apparently was responding to a story Friday in the New York Post in which Sypher was quoted saying, “I wanted to have the baby,” but that Pitino forced her to abort it by threatening harm to her children.
“I prayed to God, please, I don't want this,” Sypher said, according to the Post's story.
Pence said in the statement that both Sypher's medical records and recorded statements of Pitino “demonstrate that this decision was solely hers. Ms. Sypher's statements otherwise are part of her continuing attempt to embarrass Coach Pitino, which she promised to do in her attempt to extort money from him.”
Sypher is charged in federal court with extortion and lying to the FBI. She has pleaded not guilty.
James Earhart, her court-appointed attorney, declined to comment on Pence's assertions.
“I am not going to banter with Mr. Pence,” Earhart said. “We are going to try our case in court.”
Earhart said Sypher spoke to the Post against his advice and without his knowledge.
The Courier-Journal reported this week that Pitino told Metro Police that he had had consensual sex with Sypher on Aug. 1, 2003, at a Louisville restaurant, and later paid her $3,000 after she said she wanted an abortion but had no health insurance.
Pitino denied her claims that he had raped her at the restaurant and another location — allegations which Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Stengel in July said were void of credibility and would not be prosecuted.
Pitino held a press conference Wednesday to apologize for what he called his “indiscretion” in 2003, and the university said he would keep his job.
Sypher also told the commander of the police department's sex offense unit in an interview last month that Pitino had forced her to end her pregnancy, and that she had the abortion against her will, according to a transcript of the interview obtained under the open records act.
But records from a Cincinnati abortion clinic where she underwent the procedure on Aug. 29, 2003, show that she checked responses indicating she did not think abortion was akin to murder and that she would not regret having the procedure.
“Ms Sypher is clearly disturbed and incapable of telling the truth,” Pence said.
He added that Pitino will continue to cooperate in the federal criminal prosecution of Sypher, who is accused of trying to extort money from Pitino in exchange for her silence about her allegations.
Editor's comment: Let us agree on one thing here: it is OBVIOUS that Karen Sypher is PATHOLOGICALLY incapable of telling a truth!
