Beshear presents plan to furlough state workers
RANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Steve Beshear’s administration has presented a plan to furlough state workers for six days in the coming year to save about $24 million for Kentucky’s revenue-strapped budget.
Kentucky Personnel Cabinet Secretary Nikki Jackson said Friday the plan is aimed at minimizing the impact on state employees and limiting the disruption of state services.
Jackson said the plan was being presented to the State Personnel Board.
The plan calls for state offices to be closed the Friday before Labor Day weekend, the Friday after Veterans Day and the Friday leading into the Memorial Day weekend.
Employees will also be furloughed one day in each of three months - October, March and June.
The governor’s office says the furlough will apply to non-merit and merit employees alike, and will include the governor and his cabinet secretaries.
