RE: And You Thought Elections were Over! Not exactly – Filing for 2011 Races Begins
DATE: November 3, 2010
(Frankfort, KY) – Although many Kentuckians may have thought that the election season ended with yesterday’s election, a new cycle officially begins today. Potential candidates seeking an office on the 2011 ballot may now begin filing with the Office of the Secretary of State. Candidates will either appear on the May 17, 2011 primary or November 8, 2011 general election ballots.
“This election cycle should be exciting in Kentucky with so many high profile races on the ballot,” stated Secretary of State Trey Grayson. “Hopefully, many citizens will give serious consideration to becoming candidates for one of the races on the ballot in 2011.”
Republican and Democratic candidates have until January 25, 2011 to file for office. Independent or political group candidates must file a statement of intent by April 1, 2011 but have until August 9, 2011 to file their petitions. Each of the filing dates includes a 4:00 p.m. filing deadline.
Offices that file with the Secretary of State that are regularly scheduled to occur in 2011 include:
Governor/Lt. Governor Slate
Secretary of State
Attorney General
Auditor of Public Accounts
State Treasurer
Commissioner of Agriculture
Citizens who are interested in running for an office that files with the Secretary of State will be able to obtain the proper filing papers online, twenty-four hours a day, via FastTrack Elections. These forms can be printed out and submitted either by hand delivery or by mail. The forms will have detailed instructions to help the candidate fill out the forms properly.
In order to help candidates seeking political office, the Office of the Secretary of State developed a ballot access procedural manual titled: Declaring Your Candidacy. This manual provides Kentuckians with a quick guide to filing for political office.
Although the publication focuses primarily on candidate filing procedures, sample forms for attaining ballot access, and qualifications for each elective office, it also includes other important and pertinent election information that may affect candidates. The manual contains an election schedule, sample filing forms of various types, contact information for state election agencies, and answers to candidates’ most frequently asked questions.
