Reward doubled for info on Richmond case
Contributions from family and friends result in higher amount

A reward for information leading to an arrest in the slaying of Western Kentucky University math professor Martha “Bettina” Richmond has been doubled in hopes that someone with knowledge about the year-old case will step forward.

Richmond’s friends and family are now offering a reward of $20,000 in exchange for an arrest and indictment in the death of the 51-year-old teacher. South Central Kentucky Crime Stoppers is also offering a $1,000 reward.

Richmond’s body was found Nov. 22 in her van in the parking lot of Bowling Green Parks and Recreation at 225 Third Ave. An autopsy showed she died from multiple stab wounds.

Family friend Helen Siewers said numerous contributions from friends and family led to the increased reward.

“We all just feel like we want to do our part,” Siewers said, adding that those close to Richmond still hold out hope that her killer will be found.

“I’d like to thank all those who have made the reward possible, and the police for their continued diligence,” said Richmond’s husband, Tom, also a member of the WKU math faculty, in a university news release Friday.

“People talk about the need for closure, but to me the word ‘closure’ isn’t quite right,” he said in the release. “We definitely feel the need for answers, but Bettina’s place in our hearts will never be closed.”

The Bowling Green Police Department said Thursday that it has interviewed several people in an effort to exclude them as suspects, in addition to conducting neighborhood canvasses and multiple examinations of the van in which Richmond was found.

Surveillance footage taken from the parks and recreation building showed Richmond leaving the gym carrying a gray and black duffel bag a few hours before she was found.

A postal worker found Richmond’s WKU identification card on Dec. 4, 2009, in a mailbox in the 1100 block of Crewdson Drive.

Authorities believe the card might have been placed in the mailbox that day and released a sketch of a person of interest in the case. Police want to know how that ID card got in the mailbox.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the BGPD at 393-4000 or Crime Stoppers at 781-CLUE.
