Robert S. Tannenbaum, a former University of Kentucky administrator and educator, was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison on four counts of first-degree sexual abuse.
Prosecutors had recommended five years on each count, and Fayette Circuit Judge James Ishmael ordered that it be served consecutively. Tannenbaum, 67, was taken into custody immediately.
Before he was sentenced, Tannenbaum spoke to the judge, saying "I know what I did is terrible, devastating." He said he was entirely to blame.
"Why I did them is what I'm trying to understand," he said.
As a result of his actions, Tannenbaum said, he lost his wife and the victim. The Herald-Leader does not generally identify victims of sexual abuse.
Tannenbaum said he is volunteering at the Catholic Action Center and was in the process of becoming a volunteer at the VA.
According to court documents, the abuse occurred between Aug. 1, 1998, and June 30, 1999. Tannenbaum was placed on administrative leave from UK after his arrest. He retired in April, UK spokesman Jay Blanton said.
A UK employee since 1991, he has held several titles, including that of director of the undergraduate research office in UK's undergraduate education office. He pleaded not guilty in Fayette District Court after his arrest.
