"A Shorter Session Has Merit". I AGREE.

A shorter session has merit

Anything the state can do to save taxpayer dollars is welcome and we believe it would be a good decision by the House and the Senate in Frankfort to cut this legislative session short.

Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, had proposed shortening this year’s legislative session by six days. Under the proposal, the session would end March 16, rather than March 22.

Williams said the move would save Kentucky taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars that otherwise would be used to compensate lawmakers. He estimates that shortening the session could save taxpayers as much as $384,000.

He sent the proposal to House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, on Tuesday and Stumbo has now said that he’s willing to go along with the proposal to end the session six days early.

But Stumbo said he’s only willing to do it if the legislative work is done.

It is good to see that Stumbo is willing to compromise with Williams on this issue.

Requiring that the legislative work be done clearly is a reasonable stipulation. But this is a shorter session because it’s an odd numbered year, when budgets aren’t passed. There should be time to get other legislation debated and brought to a vote.

Cutting the session short should give Stumbo and Williams the incentive to get things moving on a faster pace.

Shortening the session has merit and we are glad Williams brought this proposal to the forefront.

We are hopeful that the legislative work can be completed during the shortened session and in doing so, taxpayers will not be burdened anymore than they already are.
