Democrats Make Kentucky Priority State, Will Be Here With "Both Feet On The Ground" For Steve Beshear.
National Democrats eyeing Ky. governor's race
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The head of the Democratic Governors Association said Kentucky's contest this fall will be a top priority for the organization.
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley told The Courier-Journal that he couldn't say how much the organization will spend in the Bluegrass State, but the group will be active as the race heats up.
"With Steve Beshear as such a leading governor in our country, the DGA will be in here with both feet," said O'Malley, who was in Louisville to speak at the Jefferson County Democratic Party's Wendell H. Ford Appreciation Dinner on Saturday.
Both parties view Kentucky has a priority because of the limited number of gubernatorial elections this year. The heads of both the Democratic and Republican governors associations have been to Kentucky this spring.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who heads the Republican Governors Association, spoke at the GOP state Lincoln Day dinner on April 9.
Beshear is unopposed for the Democratic nomination and will face the winner of the May 17 GOP primary.
Beshear, in a speech at the dinner at the Galt House in downtown Louisville, laid out his case for reelection, in which he said he balanced the state budget nine times and managed the state through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
While Beshear passed on attacking any opponent, O'Malley took his shots at Senate President David Williams, who is seeking the Republican nomination. O'Malley hammered Williams over a renovation of his Senate office a few years ago that included a $17,000 plasma television.
"Do you want a governor who gave himself a pay cut or a candidate who spent more than $52,000 on cherry veneer wood paneling for his Senate office?" O'Malley asked. "There is a group of ideological, narrow-minded, short-sighted, throwback, antique, FDR-hating, tea-partying Republican governors - and David Williams would like to join them."
