We Agree Bowling Green Needs Veterans Nursing Home.

Bowling Green needs veterans nursing home

For too many years, Bowling Green has been in dire need of a veterans nursing home.

Members of southcentral Kentucky’s veteran population say the area is undeserved and we agree.

Therefore, we are glad the Barren River Area Development District is working to get a veterans nursing home in the area.

On Monday, the BRADD board approved a resolution calling for construction of a veterans nursing home here, a facility that would be federally and state-funded and require the support of both governments. BRADD estimates that there are more than 19,000 veterans in the 10-county area, yet the closest veterans nursing home is more than 90 minutes away in Hanson. These facilities are designed to deal with needs that many regular hospitals can’t handle.

Last year, the state approved an expansion of the Hanson nursing home, which began last month.

The 120-bed facility will be able to serve 36 more veterans with the $9.9 expansion project, which should be completed in 2012. According to the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, the facility consistently has at least a 50-name waiting list.

We are thankful Hanson has such a facility, but it is obvious given the size of our city and the number of veterans in the region that a nursing home is needed here.

In the final analysis, it will probably come down to funding to get a veterans nursing home built in Bowling Green. We know times are hard, but we believe that funds must be found. It’s hard to imagine a much higher priority than addressing the real needs of aging veterans.

Although the passage of this resolution is a step in the right direction, we still have a long way to go in getting a veterans nursing home here, but hopefully it can be done. Our veterans deserve nothing but the very best care.
