I Am Getting A Sense That Liberals FEAR Jon Huntsman. Read More Here.

Editorial | Huntsman's candidacy

When Jon Huntsman Jr. announced on Tuesday that he, too, is running for president of the United States, he stood in the same spot Ronald Reagan announced his bid in 1980. Nice touch, the flanking flags and the Statue of Liberty over Mr. Huntsman's shoulder, but they weren't enough to bring back the Gipper or to remove the longest shadow hanging over the Huntsman candidacy — that of Barack Obama.

After he was governor of Utah and before he was a declared White House hopeful, Mr. Huntsman was the United States ambassador to China. Newly elected President Obama, a Democrat, tapped the Republican Huntsman for the job because of his experience and expertise in Asia. The President noted that his choice for ambassador was known for putting country before party. As for Mr. Huntsman, he said in May 2009, “I never expected to be called into action by the person who beat us. But I grew up understanding that the most basic responsibility one has is service to country. When the president of the United States asks you to serve in a capacity like this, that, to me, is the end of the conversation.”

Well, not quite. At the end of January 2011, Ambassador Huntsman submitted his letter of resignation, effective April 30. On Tuesday, he formally announced his intent to run for president.

What happened to his sentiments of a year before? Good question.

In his presidential announcement, former Ambassador Huntsman said his stint in China gave him some perspective on the U.S. and its “path back to greatness.” Maybe it also gave him the long view on a weak Republican field for the White House in the 2012 race and he figured, “Why not?”

The move should prompt other questions that go beyond whether it's good form for an ambassador to resign and run against the president that appointed him.

An ambassador is prohibited from taking part in partisan campaigns, but the story goes that some powerful elves were busy building Mr. Huntsman's campaign that was ready and waiting upon his return.

The newly minted candidate said he was shocked and humbled to find all that groundwork done. Voters are forgiven if their skeptics' meters hit tilt.
