"[Mitch] McConnell Is Right About Trials At Gitmo". YEP!
McConnell is right about trials at Gitmo
By the Daily News
As we have stated since the war on terror began, we believe that unlawful enemy combatants should be tried by a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay and not in the United States.
We echo that call once again in the case of the two alleged terrorists who were recently arrested in Bowling Green, accused of trying to aide the insurgency against our troops in Iraq.
Waad Ramadan Alwan has admitted fighting with the insurgency in Iraq and the other alleged terrorist, Mohaned Shareef Hammadi, was allegedly an insurgent fighter in Iraq, which is why they need to be tried at Guantanamo Bay rather than in Kentucky.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is rightfully calling on the Obama administration to have these men tried at Guantanamo Bay rather than in Kentucky.
His reasoning to hold the trial at Guantanamo makes perfect sense.
McConnell says that sending them to Guantanamo is the only way to ensure that these two men won’t enjoy all the rights and privileges of U.S. citizens. He further argues that Kentuckians shouldn’t have to bear the cost and have to deal with the disturbances and disruptions that would come with a civilian trial.
Further, holding the trial in Kentucky could potentially bring retaliatory attacks against jurors, judges and citizens in the city where the trial is held or the entire state.
Finally, McConnell said these are unlawful enemy combatants and should be treated as such.
Waad Ramadan Alwan admitted that he took part in the insurgency in Iraq. Alwan is on tape admitting to have procured explosives and missiles in Iraq and to have used them daily to conduct strikes. In a reference to attacks on U.S. troops, Alwan said his “lunch and dinner would be an American.”
One can only look at those words with pure disdain and provides further evidence they have no respect for Americans’ lives and therefore should be tried at Guantanamo.
McConnell probably spoke for the majority of Kentuckians when he made the following statements on the Senate floor on Tuesday.
“But I can say with certainty that Kentuckians don’t want foreign fighters who’ve bragged about killing and maiming U.S. soldiers in a combat theater treated like common criminals in their own backyards,” McConnell said. “Anyone who has taken up arms against U.S. forces in the field of battle is an enemy combatant pure and simple, and should be treated like one. They should be hunted and captured, detained and interrogated, and tried away from civilian populations according to the laws of war.”
The senior senator from Kentucky is right. These men came here with intentions to harm our soldiers in the field. We believe, like the senator does, that they are enemy combatants and should be treated as such.
They shouldn’t be granted the same rights and privileges as U.S. citizens and ultimately must be tried at Guantanamo by a military tribunal.
