A Louisville mother was arrested Thursday night after her children were found wandering alone at a Kroger a half-mile from their home.

Wendy Knight, 26, was charged with two counts each of first-degree wanton endangerment, second-degree criminal abuse and endangering the welfare of a minor as well as one count of public intoxication of a controlled substance, according to her arrest report.

Louisville Metro Police officers found two children, ages 2 and 5, wandering alone Thursday night at the Kroger at South Third Street and West Whitney Avenue, which is about half a mile from the children’s home in the 500 block of Camden Avenue.

Knight told police that a neighbor was watching the children while Knight had taken a Xanax and was sleeping, according to the arrest report.

EMS evaluated the children and said they had bug bites that were infected, that neither had eaten in many hours and that the 2-year-old had not had a diaper change in nearly eight hours.

Both children were transported to Home of the Innocents. Knight was taken to Metro Corrections, where officers found two pills in her pocket. She was also charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance and first-degree promoting contraband.
