Senate President David Williams’ father-in-law made a $1 million contribution to the Republican Governors Association in June.
Terry Stephens, owner of Stephens Pipe and Steel in Russell Springs, made the personal contribution on June 22, according to documents filed with the IRS. Stephens said he’s not in the habit of making such large contributions, but “David is family.”
“I’ve donated to the Kentucky Republican Party many times, but that’s my first donation to the RGA,” Stephens said Monday, August 1.
He added that the RGA is not allowed to earmark money for the Kentucky campaign, so his contribution was made “on faith.”
The RGA had said even before Stephens’ contribution that it planned to be “aggressive” in the commonwealth, since the Kentucky race is one of only four gubernatorial races in the country this year.
On July 11, the RGA launched a television ad touting Williams’ experience in the Kentucky General Assembly and noting the unemployment statistics associated with the administration of Gov. Steve Beshear, the Democrat who Williams is trying to unseat. Beshear's running mate is former Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, and Williams running mate is Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer.
The RGA reported raising $22,167,912 from Jan. 1 through June 30 of this year. The reports were filed July 31 with the IRS.
In addition to Stephens, other Kentucky contributors to the RGA during this period include:
• Atria Senior Living Group, Louisville – $25,000
• Brown-Forman Corp., Louisville – $35,000
• HS Developers, Louisville – $5,000
• Wayne Hughes, associate, Spendthrift Farm, Lexington – $100,000
• McCarthy Strategic Solutions, Frankfort – $5,000
• Norton Commons Professional Group, Prospect – $25,000
