"People Are Tired of BIG Government".
People are tired of big government
The reactions of the large crowd that packed Hartford City Hall for a town hall meeting hosted by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and another joint appearance with U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., at the Owensboro Rotary Club reflects the frustration and the mood of many Kentuckians about an out-of-control government.
We share with our senators and many citizens of this state frustrations about how big our government has become and a belief that the out-of-control spending must stop.
When this country was formed, our founding fathers envisioned a smaller government that would intrude as little as possible into our everyday lives, but we seem to have moved away from their vision.
President Barack Obama, in particular, believes a bigger government is better government. One indication of that is the individual mandate in the health care bill, which has serious implications for our individual freedoms.
He couldn’t be any more wrong and the public sentiment expressed at these meetings is indicative of that argument.
One only has to look at the frustration of Daviess County resident Steve Wiggins, who was at Paul’s town hall meeting in Hartford.
“What can I do? What can we do?” Wiggins asked. “I see the deterioration of our nation before me. I’m 50. I’ve got kids. It seems to me our better days are gone; they’re behind us. Can we come out of this, and if so, what can I do to help you win the battle?”
Paul responded by saying send reinforcements to Washington, calling for the public to elect more people who share his beliefs.
Ultimately, Paul said, we’re going to need a new leader for the country, which drew applause.
Paul is certainly right. We need to elect more people with the mindset that government is the problem, not the American people. He is also correct that a new commander-in-chief is needed to bring the smaller government back, reduce entitlement programs and eliminate wasteful programs.
We’ve tried it their way and the results are a higher deficit and out-of-control spending, which has created a debt service that is unsustainable.
We also agree with McConnell - who some liberal blogs and columnists grudgingly credit as the one who ultimately didn’t allow the country to go into default - that government spending needs to be cut and the government has grown too large.
The frustration expressed in Hartford and Owensboro isn’t just limited to one state. People are fed up. Our country is headed in the wrong direction with big government and resulting debt. They want a change and we are hopeful that they soon get it.
