KY attorney gets 8 years in prison for theft
COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A northern Kentucky lawyer has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from clients and forging a state senator's name.
Kenton Circuit Judge Martin Sheehan on Tuesday also ordered 42-year-old Patrick Moeves to pay restitution.
Moeves' lawyer, public defender John Delaney, asked for probation, saying his client helped prosecutors and police sort out the thefts, The Kentucky Enquirer reported (http://bit.ly/orSIAw ).
Moeves admitted he took fees for work he didn't perform and forged the name of state Sen. Jack Westwood on a deed, which allowed land to be sold to Moeves' cousin.
Prosecutors said Moeves took money from clients, saying it would be used to cover expert witness testimony or pay for the witnesses' travel, but he kept the funds himself.
