Breaking news: Republican U. S. Senator, John Warner of Virginia, decides to retire.
Republican U. S. Senator from Virginia, John Warner, has decided to retire after 30 years in the Senate.
We wish the Senator well. It appears that his seat will be picked up by another Warner -- a Democrat former Governor.
Meanwhile, in another unrelated story -- except for the fact that they are both Senators and retirement is in their immediate futures -- Senator "Toilet guy" Larry Craig of Idaho is expected to announce his resignation from the Senate anytime now. We will post his announcement when it happens.

In case anyone's confused, Warner will not run for reelection when his term expires at the end of '08. In Craig's case, what we're hoping for is his immediate resignation and exit from office so a replacement can be named by the governor of Idaho.
Back to Warner: He was an establishment-style conservative most of the time (mostly known in his first term for his short-lived marriage to Liz Taylor). But in 1987 he dealt a major blow to the conservative cause by being a key opponent of Reagan's nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. After Bork was voted down, the eventual occupant of that seat, Justice Anthony Kennedy, helped prevent an anti-Roe v Wade consensus from emerging on the court for a generation. Shame on both Senator Warner and Justice Kennedy!
Thanks, nich. con.. Your insights are always appreciated.
