What are they REALLY saying?: gambling, unions and defense funds.
The Herald Leader continues its gubernatorial debate questions, this time the candidates pose questions to each other on gambling, unions and defense funds. Here ate questions and the candidates responses:
Fletcher's Question:
You have advocated unionization of state government employees. If the union bosses supporting you push to unionize the employees of your Kentucky casinos and the racetracks where they are located, will you support their efforts?
Beshear's Response:
The employees will have the same right to organize and bargain collectively as do all other employees in the private sector.
My view: Steve Beshear did NOT wishy-washy his rather straight forward answer.
Beshear's Question:
Simple yes or no question, Mr. Fletcher: Before November 6th will you release names of all who have contributed to your secret legal defense fund so voters will know whether you have taken contributions, as you have in the past, from gaming interests and others doing business with the state?
Fletcher's Response:
I have followed the law regarding the legal fund. I have also stated that there are no contributors that are not on my campaign financial disclosure. I encourage Steve Beshear to release the findings of the secret investigation of his actions that led to the collapse of Kentucky Central.
My view: Steve Beshear did NOT get his simple answer. Simply put, Ernie Fletcher does NOT plan on releasing the names of those "who have contributed to [the] secret legal defense fund ... ."
Also, Steve Beshear can only ask to have the report of the "secret investigation of his actions that led to the collapse of Kentucky Central," as he has done; only the judge in the case, who ordered the report sealed, can order its release. Steve Beshear has NOTHING to do with the report's release!
There you have it, the candidates' stance, in their own words.
