Our endorsement for Agricultural Commissioner, and our hearts are WARMER for Farmer!
In March 1984, Kentucky was introduced to a plucky young basketball player from Clay County named Richie Farmer. Though Farmer was only in the eighth grade that year, that didn’t stop him from playing with Bobby Keith’s legendary Clay County Tigers basketball team at the Rupp Arena.
Farmer would return to Rupp and the Sweet 16 for the following four seasons for a record total of 5 appearances. Along the way he would lead his team to one state championship, would be named tourney MVP, and in his senior year would become Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball, winning an athletic scholarship to play with the UK Wildcats.
At UK, Farmer’s career followed a similar pattern. After a successful playing career at UK, his jersey became one of the 36 in Wildcat history to be retired.
In 2003 Richie Farmer moved into a new field of play: Kentucky politics.
As a freshman elected official, Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has promoted Kentucky Agricultural products. The Kentucky Proud initiative, which has been promoted heavily by Farmer, has resulted in over $35 million dollars a year in retail sales of Kentucky grown or processed agricultural products. Since the loss of tobacco subsidies, Farmer’s office has watched over an evolving farm economy that shows signs of growth in areas like agri-tourism and farm entrepreneurship, policy fields especially well suited to Farmer’s promotional abilities. This transition has been facilitated by the Kentucky Agricultural Policy board of which Farmer is an instrumental player. Further, Farmer has strongly embraced and promoted bio-fuels, an area that has both national security implications and holds promise of economic growth here in Kentucky -- particularly in Eastern Kentucky.
Watching Richie over the past four years we appreciate what he's been able to accomplish. And like those sports fans who first watched him play ball many years ago at Rupp, we believe this guy will only get better. It is for all these reasons that our hearts are WARMED for Richie Farmer, and we endorse him for Agricultural Commissioner.

I don’t think being a former UK basketball star is a good reason to receive an endorsement. Neither candidate for this office has done anything worthy of an endorsement. That’s why the editorial boards at both major daily newspapers in Kentucky left this race alone. This would’ve been a perfect year for a well-known politician to have run for Agriculture Commissioner as an Independent.
