Governor Beshear delivers homeland security money to Harlan County!

Here's the press release:

Governor Beshear Announces Homeland Security Grant

FRANKFORT, KY (January 31, 2008) – Gov. Steve Beshear today announced a $15,000 U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant to be awarded to Harlan County Fiscal Court. The funds will be used to update the communication infrastructure for local law enforcement officials and first responders. The new equipment will improve the interoperable communication capabilities between eight agencies in the Harlan County area.

"In today’s climate, it is vitally important that all first responders have access to interoperable communications," Beshear said. "This equates to greater safety for those answering the call, and it enhances public safety by providing a more coordinated response."

The grant, administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, is made in partnership with Harlan County officials as they work to complete their county-wide interoperable communication plan. It will ultimately affect more than 20 law enforcement, fire, rescue and emergency management agencies. Once the upgrades are in place, it will also improve ability to access the state-wide mutual aid system.

"Ensuring the safety and security of Kentuckians is one of this office’s top priorities," said Adam Edelen, Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. "Effective communication is essential to our public safety personnel to help us prevent crime and respond to emergencies."

Update: 8:44 P. M.: Governor Steve Beshear has drawn the ire of some for using the state airplane for this trip?

Is the criticism FAIR OR UNFAIR?
