HAZARD — A former Perry County judge-executive who pleaded guilty to federal mail-fraud charges is back in politics.
The Democratic Party in Perry County has nominated Sherman Neace for the seat left vacant after the death of Magistrate Jimmy Darrell Neace, who was killed in a double murder-suicide in May. The two men were not related.
Sherman Neace will run for the position against Republican newcomer Frank Hurley.
Neace was sentenced to 15 months in prison in April 2000, after pleading guilty to charges that he sold used vehicles to the county at inflated prices and routed them through Central Kentucky car dealers to disguise his involvement. Neace was judge-executive at the time.
The original indictment charged Neace with 10 counts of money laundering and mail fraud in a scheme that netted him at least $13,000.
Neace did not immediately return Herald-Leader phone calls for comment Friday. Earlier, he told the Hazard-Herald, a newspaper in Perry County, that roads were paved and bridges built throughout the county while he was judge-executive.
If elected, Neace said, he would continue to work on road improvements and bringing city water to those who don't have it.
Hurley said he does not think Neace's criminal record is an issue and he will not focus on Neace's past in the election.
“I'm not really interested in the past,” Hurley told the Herald-Leader on Friday. “I think our county needs to move forward.”
Still, Hurley says, he wants voters in Perry County to know they can count on him to be honest.
Editor's comment: "Hurley says, he wants voters in Perry County to know they can count on him to be honest."
Therein lies mr. Hurley's first and only disqualifying remark!
And I have NO doubt Mr. Neace will find many voters who will be glad to campaign for him, such as these six fine "upright" citizens.
