Lexington Herald Leader Editorial: Promote [Katie] Stein To Fill 13th District Seat.

Promote Stein to fill 13th District seat

In the years since Republicans took control of the state Senate, Sen. Ernesto Scorsone provided the most consistent voice speaking out against the heavy-handed methods President David Williams has used to control the upper chamber of the General Assembly.

If voters in the 13th District want to continue sending someone to Frankfort to hold Williams accountable, they should promote state Rep. Kathy Stein to the seat Scorsone vacated to become a circuit judge.

To say that Stein, in her six terms in the House, has developed a reputation for being outspoken is to understate the case by light years. But despite the fact that she has ruffled many feathers with her oratory, her ability and backbone were recognized by House leaders when they made her chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee, traditionally the final resting place for bad bills.

Stein would also carry on Scorsone's legacy as one of the more eloquent voices for education and for meeting the health and social service needs of the state's more vulnerable citizens, whether they are children, senior citizens, disabled or just poor.

Stein's opponent, Chuck Ellinger II, has done well enough as a member of the Urban County Council. He struck a welcome note of civility during the tumultuous years when the council was guided by then-Vice Mayor Mike Scanlon.

But Ellinger has essentially been a passive council member, initiating few measures and taking few decisive stands.

Stein's legislative experience and her willingness to call her colleagues out when necessary make her the better choice by far for voters of the 13th District.

Editor's comment: I have worked with Mrs. Stine in the past, and I found her pleasant to work with. Granted, I do NOT believe I know her opponent.
