More Louisville Courier Journal Endorsements: Boswell And Davis.
Two for Congress
Both David Boswell and Brett Guthrie are respected members of the state senate, the former representing Owensboro and the latter representing Bowling Green. Mr. Boswell is a Democrat and Mr. Guthrie a Republican. Both are conservatives, running in what some call Kentucky's most conservative constituency, the 2nd U.S. House District.
There's not much to separate them on the issues. Mr. Guthrie pledges to "be a congressman more interested in solving problems than in political posturing."
Mr. Boswell is a fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat. In the General Assembly he has been willing to take the right position on difficult issues with respect to education, domestic violence and funding help for those in need.
Either of these candidates would make a fine congressman, but we give the edge to the one who would join a strong Democratic majority in Congress in support of a new president's program for change: Mr. Boswell.
In the 4th District, incumbent Republican Geoff Davis will be re-elected. His youthful Democratic opponent, Dr. Michael Kelley, has not raised the money necessary to mount a serious challenge.
Mr. Davis, a conservative, is not a doctrinaire anti-government type. He worked two years, and with bipartisan skill, for example, to pass a bill addressing child homelessness.
Dr. Kelley, an Oldham County physician, is bright and progressive. It's too bad so few voters will have a chance to hear his well-considered views on a long list of issues ranging from health care to education to the war in Iraq.
Our endorsement goes to the person who did what was necessary to share his message: Geoff Davis.
