OK, You Knew It Was Coming: Campaigns React To SURVEYUSA Polls. Read More.

Campaigns react to WHAS11 SurveyUSA poll
Joe Arnold

Here is reaction by major candidates to the first independent poll of the U.S. Senate race for the seat being vacated by Jim Bunning. The statements are provided here in the order that they were received by WHAS11.

Sec. of State Trey Grayson (R)

Statement from Secretary Grayson:

"Well, the press loves polls, but voters tend to look more closely at the candidates and their records. While our campaign is clearly well positioned, this race has barely begun. I will formally announce my campaign next week on a two-day, twelve-stop tour across Kentucky, and I look forward to sharing with voters more about my record and my commitment to Kentucky."

Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo (D)

The Mongiardo Campaign issued the following statement:

"By any poll taken, Daniel Mongiardo beats Jack Conway in the Democratic Primary and has replaced Conway as the strongest Democratic candidate against Trey Grayson.

"This poll shows real support for Daniel Mongiardo's commitment to helping Kentucky working families during these difficult economic times.

"Voters understand Daniel Mongiardo is the only candidate with a record of fighting for working families---who supports healthcare reform, developing clean Kentucky coal, and opposes the cap and trade bill supported by Jack Conway which will cause electric rates to soar and cost thousands of Kentucky jobs."

Dr. Rand Paul (R)

"We're pleased with these early results indicating significant momentum for Rand Paul at the beginning of a long campaign."

"Kentucky Republicans are realizing that being just a little better than Washington D.C. Democrats isn't going to cut it any more in a country that can't afford to play political games. Rand Paul is a Constitutional Republican. As this campaign focuses on moving the party and the nation toward building a more prosperous and free America, you will see more people eagerly turn to Rand Paul to represent them."

David Adams

Attorney General Jack Conway (D)

CONWAY GAINS 12 POINTS IN LATEST SURVEY - U.S. SENATE RACE WIDE OPEN
61% of DEMOCRATS DO NOT WANT MONGIARDO

"The story from this poll is that Dan Mongiardo, who has run 5 races in 9 years - including 3 major statewide campaigns - accumulating high name ID, is at 39% amongst Democrats. Meaning 61% of Democrats are looking for a new nominee.

And according to Mongiardo's own polling that he has relentlessly spun since late May we have now gained 12% points making this contest neck and neck.

This race is a marathon, not a sprint, and Jack Conway is the only candidate who has what it takes to win this race - the support of the national party, the endorsements of statewide leaders, a tremendous fundraising advantage and a record of showing up to work and fighting for issues that are important to Kentucky families."
