POTUS Barack Obama Consders Plan To House And Try GITMO Prisoners In United States, Some In Military Object.

USS Cole CDR Statement On New GITMO Detainee Plan

Washington, DC – Kirk S. Lippold, Former USS Cole Commander and Senior Military Fellow at Military Families United, released the following statement concerning the recently reported news that President Obama plans to relocate Guantanamo detainees into the United States and create a US prison and courtroom-within-a-prison complex. Three government sources told the Associated Press that as many as 170 of the detainees now at Guantanamo are unlikely to be held accountable for their terrorists acts and will not be prosecuted.

“If the new report concerning the future of GITMO detainees is correct, then President Obama will order the release of almost 170 terrorists, spend hundreds of millions of additional taxpayer dollars to create a Guantanamo Bay in Kansas or Michigan, and disregard the will of a majority of American people who oppose closing GITMO. His plan will endanger the lives of American citizens and allow terrorists to have taxpayer funded flights back to the battlefield.

The plan to create a court inside a prison system is not a novel concept. In fact, it is the same system that already exists at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. If this plan is enacted, the detainees will be subject to US laws and not the laws of war, meaning that it would take just one activist judge to order them released. This happened just last week when a federal judge ordered a terrorist released who tried to kill two American soldiers and an Afghan civilian.

While every President has a sworn duty to protect this country and its citizens, President Obama has chosen to disregard the collective analysis and intelligence that clearly shows the danger of releasing the remaining detainees. He continues to cling to the misplaced false hope that released detainees will not return to the fight. It is an unrealistic and unnecessary gamble with our national security. Americans deserve better and should demand the Administration not pander to the ACLU by closing GITMO and releasing terrorists to return to the battlefield.”

CDR Kirk S. Lippold, USN (Ret.) was the Commanding Officer of USS Cole when it was attacked by al Qaeda terrorists in October 2000. CDR Lippold, who served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff crafting detainee policy in the initial stages of the war on terror, met with the President in February and with Department of Justice in June to discuss the closure of Guantanamo Bay.
