Western Kentucky University Men's Basketball Coach, Ken McDonald, To Meet With Athletic Director, Ross Bjork. I Suspect One Will Lose His Job.

Western Kentucky University athletic director Ross Bjork plans to meet with basketball coach Ken McDonald — perhaps as early as the end of the week.

WKU spokesman Todd Stewart said the meeting would be an end-of-the-season review that the athletic director does with all of the school’s coaches.

Stewart said that Bjork would not comment about the men’s basketball program or the coach until after the meeting.

The Hilltoppers’ season ended Monday with an 81-62 loss to North Texas in the Sun Belt tournament semifinals. They finished 16-16 for their worst record since going 11-18 in 1999-2000. The preseason favorite to win the East Division finished third at 8-8 in league play.

The team had two players dismissed during the season — junior college point guard Ken Brown and senior forward Cliff Dixon. Freshman guard Brandon Peters was academically ineligible for the spring semester.

WKU has also suffered losses at the gate. Average attendance at Diddle Arena was 3,821 — down from 4,461 last season and 5,138 in 2008-09.

McDonald is 58-38 in three seasons with an NCAA Tournament appearance his rookie season. The Hilltoppers beat Illinois in the first round in 2009.

McDonald did not immediately respond to a message left on his cell phone. When asked about his future in previous interviews the 41-year-old said: “I love this university. … I can’t control that stuff. I just can’t. If you start thinking about it too much then you’re not coaching your team.”

WKU will lose three starters, including All-Sun Belt first-team selections in senior forwards Sergio Kerusch and Steffphon Pettigrew.

The Hilltoppers signed five high school seniors to national letters of intent in November, including Warren Central forward George Fant and Clark County forward Vinny Zollo.
