Arrest Of Iraqis In Bowling Green, Kentucky, MUST Not Spur Misguided Hate Towards Innocent Immigrants.

Arrests should not spur hate toward others

The arrests of two Iraqis in Bowling Green this week was shocking news for our community.

Although they have not been convicted of any crime contained in a 23-count indictment handed down by a federal grand jury in Bowling Green, the charges against them are very serious and it is scary to think that men facing charges like these were living among us.

Judging from the charges they faced, these men weren’t allegedly planning on inflicting any harm to this community or anywhere else in the U.S., but allegedly were trying to help insurgents in Iraq according to court documents.

Only time will tell if these men are guilty of these crimes or not. That is not up to us, but up to a court of law to determine.

Having said that, we urge the community not to overreact or respond inappropriately to anyone of Middle Eastern descent or other foreign origin because of the arrests of these two men.

One of the great strengths of this community is that it is a diverse one. The majority of immigrants who have chosen to live in our community are hard-working, law-abiding citizens who contribute to this city in many ways.

Just because two men allegedly meant harm to our soldiers in Iraq doesn’t mean that the Iraqi population and others of foreign descent should be targeted.

Restraint must be practiced. Citizens of this town should not consider taking the law into their own hands and taking revenge on innocent people who happened to migrate here from another country.

Bowling Green is a welcoming town and we welcome people of all ethnicities to this community who come here through legal channels.

In the case of the two men in question, the Department of Homeland Security has admitted that screening gaps allowed them to enter the U.S. and then inevitably Bowling Green.

They now say those gaps have now been addressed and we can only hope that they are.

Justice will be served by acquittal or conviction for the two Iraqis who resided in this community. Only time will tell what will happen to them.

What is certain is that we must not let these indictments taint our view of all immigrants in our community.
