What are they REALLY saying?: gambling and sin.

This week's Pol Watcher's question for the gubernatorial candidates asks:

Do you believe gambling – whether it occurs in a casino, at a racetrack or in the basement of a Catholic church – is a sin? Also, what’s the most you’ve ever won or lost at a casino, racetrack or bingo hall?

BESHEAR:

The real sin is that in 2007 more than a half-million Kentuckians, including 81,000Steve_beshear children, have no health insurance. The real sin is senior citizens have to choose between medications and food. The real sin is school children deprived of educational opportunities essential in preparing them for the 21st Century, and Kentucky lagging behind in job opportunities. The real sin is an indicted governor who has shortchanged Kentuckians with dishonest leadership. My father and grandfather were ministers who instilled in me faith and values that remain with me today. As Governor, I will serve the people of Kentucky with integrity.

FLETCHER:

What’s important is that Beshear’s promise to establish 11 casinos in Kentucky isErnie_fletcher bad public policy. Studies show 81% of Illinois casino gamblers are from Illinois, and 75% of Missouri casino spending was redirected from Missouri’s economy. Using these numbers, Kentuckians must lose over $1.1 billion to meet Beshear’s goals, shipping $742 million out of Kentucky’s economy to out-of-state casino owners while possibly bringing $124 million in taxes from tourists. One new dollar for every six lost is a bad bet, even before considering increased crime, divorce, suicide, and bankruptcy. I usually make an annual contribution at the Kentucky Derby.

My view: Both candidates did NOT answer the question!
