***** Kentucky's Racist History. *****
From the Courier-Journal:
A recent poll shows Sen. Barak Obama getting only 25 percent of the vote among Democrats in Kentucky. That shouldn't be surprising. Kentucky, dominated by Democrats, is still plagued with racism.
Kentucky was a slave state. Kentucky participated in segregation with its own Jim Crow laws and Negro codes. Kentucky's people voted against the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery in 1865. They voted against the 14th Amendment, requiring states to provide all "people" in them equal protection of the law and due process of the law in 1867. And voted against the 15th Amendment, giving former slaves the right to vote in 1869. Kentucky's people did not ratify those amendments until 1979, 110 years after the last was ratified by other states.
With a racist history like that, it is not surprising that only 25 percent of Democrats would vote for Obama.

No comments needed, other than I repeat my previous statements: Barack Obama will NOT need Kentucky's votes to BEAT BILLARY Clinton.

she'll need kentucky's superdelegates . . .
Like I said, Barack Obama will beat BILLARY Clinton, and he won't need Kentucky's votes -- super delegates or not -- to do so.

deeply resent Ed Smith's opinion that racism is the reason that Obama is not doing well in Kentucky. Perhaps it is his inexperience, elitist views.radical minister, radical friends and his vague stands on issues that frighten Kentuckians of both parties. I am sick and tired of anyone who questions Obama's views or qualifications being labled as a racist.Barack does not walk on water and his halo is showing a few cracks!
Steve, BEFORE you blow a valve or gasket, NO one has called you a racist.
When you speak of Obama's inexperience, you attribute some experience to his rivals.
What is BILLARY Clinton's experience? Is it sleeping with Bill? If so, then a LOT of women, including Monica Lewinsky ought to be running for President, too.
Is is living in the White House, then the White House Chef, ought to be running for President, too.
Is it being a Senator? Then so is Obama.
So rather than resent Ed Smith for his BOLD statements, you should REALLY resent the FACTS instead!

I resent anyone who portrays Kentuckians as rednecks, hillbilly's or racist for political gain or any other purpose.I also resent liberals in the MSM or anyone who finds it acceptable to promote these stereotypes but would never dare do such a thing to any other racial, ethnic or demographic group.
We are no more racist than any other state and certainly not because of lack of support for an unknown and inexperienced politician.Bill Clinton has always been very popular in Kentucky and the state went for him in 1992 and 1996.
I am not about to blow a gasket but I have had enough of jerks injecting race into this election.Americans already have enough that divide us let's not reopen old wounds!
Osi: The statements of Ed Smith are not facts only his interpretation of polling results!
Of course...it makes perfect sense.....if you don't agree with someone who is black and support them unconditionally you must be a racist!!! Get a grip!!! I am black and have no intention of voting for Obama.....He is inexperienced, and has too many unknown or questionable character issues.....let him ripen in the light of public scrutiny for a few more years and see how he fares...
We'll see if those poll results bear out as facts. I'm willing to bet on it.
anon 4:50: Can we verify your Black statement? Probably NOT since you are (drum roll) anonymous.
Having said that, let me say this: The writer of the letter is merely pointing out that, with Kentucky's racial past, it is logical to assume a connection between it and Obama's political problems in Kentucky, and I tend to AGREE with him that race is a part of Obama's problem.
That, however, does not mean that ALL of Obama's problems are attributable to racism, or that the problem lies ONLY with the Democratic Party.
Wow - that is a bold statement coming from a party chair in a deeply GOP stronghold (see also: Geoff "Boy" Davis). I agree 100% with what he is saying (see also: "Hussein Osama," his "angry" wife Michelle, lapel pin, Rev. Wright, William Ayers conflation.) You can paint it any way you like, but that's all related to racism and that's all related to him being an OMG black man. The inexperience thing? Yeah, that too. Of course, to pretend that Kentucky's racist history is any greater than any other state is patently false, but let's not pretend that dogwhistles haven't been used by politicians of all stripes and that they don't continue to be used today.
Now when is Osi going to address the repeated sexism of using "Billary" on his site?
Jean, when is it sexist to refer to the Clintons as BILLARY?
In case you do NOT know what the term means, it is a combination of BILL (Clinton) and HILLARY (Clinton).
Do you get it?
So where's the sexism, I ask ya?
I hope you answer, Jean.
Oh, yes, KyJD, I am smart enough to "get" that Billary is a combination of "Bill" and "Hillary." However, it's used against her as a sexist slur b/c it presupposes that as a woman, she is nothing without her husband, that they are interchangable, that she is not capable of independent thought, holding her accountable for the indescresions of her husband, subsuming into her husband, etc. It's Limbaughesque poo and I honestly wish you'd be above that and see it for what it is, b/c this blog is otherwise excellent, even when I hold different opinions than the writers.
Jean, I was not questioning your smartness and my apologies if my post sounded so. I was not sure you knew where the term BILLARY came from.
Anyway, BILLARY is not a sexist term. It is used (at least by me) as a way of showing that they (Bill and Hillary) BOTH act in concert, at least as against Obama!
So instead of saying Bill and Hillary, I just say BILLARY!!
Hillary Clinton is the one running. You should call her Hillary, and to continue to call her "Billary" (as if they are both running, which they are not), is a sexist conflation for all the reasons I listed above. End of story. (Sort of like how "Hussein Osama" is racist and juvenile. Yeah, it's his name (sort of). But people do it to play on racist fears.)
Most people, including me, will tell you that Obama is essentially running against Bill and Hillary!
As for your "sort of", I do not see the comparison, at all. And the use of Obama's middle name doesn't bother me, if everyone will also use the other candidates' given middle names to address them.
Singling out Obama for DISPARATE treatment MUST be racist, as you point out, but also is being done probably for RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY reasons, as well!
