Anne Coulter decries immigration, "the left's new form of slavery".

Anne Coulter, the smart blond and pretty fire brand Conservative Columnist, -- did you know she has a PH.D? -- has a new take on the immigration debate, particularly its amnesty provisions. You should read it here. But let me provide you with this excerpt:
...
Something tells me the immigration debate would be different if we were importing millions of politicians or Hollywood agents. You lose your job, while I keep my job at the Endeavor agency, my Senate seat, my professorship, my editorial position or my presidency. (And I get a maid!)
...
The only beneficiaries of these famed hardworking immigrants -- unlike you lazy Americans -- are the wealthy, who want the cheap labor while making the rest of us chip in for the immigrants' schooling, food and health care.
...
Liberals love to strike generous, humanitarian poses with other people's lives.
...
We fought a civil war to force Democrats to give up on slavery 150 years ago. They've become so desperate for servants that now they're importing an underclass to wash their clothes and pick their vegetables. This vast class of unskilled immigrants is the left's new form of slavery.

Did I miss something? "Liberals" synonomous with business... after all, it's largely the latter who want to hire these immigrants who take jobs that most current US citizens don't want.

I don't typically get into defending the libs, but they're pushing this issue b/c of huminitarian and political grounds. In terms of a pure heart, there's seldom such a thing in politics; but they seem to be closer to having one on this issue. So I don't understand the hit except in the context of "It's easier to disparage liberal supporters of the bill than conservatives... and who gives a hoot about intellectual honesty, anyways."

As for the underlying comparison, let's get this straight:

1. African people were captured, often by fellow Africans, and sold against their will to Europeans who shipped them across the world against their will. Once there they were forced to wear chains, subject to be beaten, often raped, could be sold at any time, were sometimes denied their children or the right to be with the person they loved. If they objected to any of that they could be killed. In some locales it was found cheaper to just work them to death rather than care for them... admittedly a minority of slaves faced this, but it happened.

2. Illegal immigration involves a migrant who comes to America in violation of our laws. He/she does so willingly and typically just wants some form of work. Exploitation is illegal, hiring them and not paying their taxes is technically illegal. At any point they can leave. Most stay because of the economic opportunity. They're often willing to shoulder hard work, but only at their own discretion. They never suffer under the oppressive power of a legal regime that keeps them down.

Let me sum this up: Coulter is a complete idiot if she thinks immigration is akin to slavery.

As always, yours most respectfully, Cyberhillbilly.

Hope all's well friend.

Well, CYBER one:

I took issue with her characterization of illegal immigration as slavery. Slaves were NOT paid. These illegals are, though for pittance and like you said are NOT forced to work but do so out of economic necessity.

The illegals' plight is more of an economic exploitation, and maybe VOLUNTARY servitude (unlike slavery which was INVOLUNTARY!)

So there is a BIG difference, even if the difference is just in degree ONLY; AND, you know Anne Coulter has got to add in there her brand of POLITICAL HYPERBOLE!!

You just have to know how to read her piece -- you remove the chaff to get to the grain. That way you'll find that she makes a valid point or two!!!

I hope ALL is well with you and yours.
