Court orders "Fen-phen" lawyers jailed pending trial.
In an update to my earlier posts (here's one), the three lawyers, Melbourne Mills Jr., Shirley Cunningham Jr. and William Gallion, who are involved in the fen-phen drug settlement debacle, have had their bonds revoked and ordered jailed by a Federal Judge, U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman, while they await trial in the matter. Trial is tentatively set for January 2008.
Update: Read the transcript of the hearing. Was the Judge right to order jail pending trial because "in my opinion, not only are these three men on trial; the whole legal profession is on trial", or should the Judge only consider whether the accuseds are likely to go on the "lam", if freed, in order to avoid trial altogether?
Note: Here are two opposing views: YES, and NO.
Update #2: The Judge has scheduled a hearing in the case, presumably to re-visit the issue of the Attorneys' release from jail while they await trial.
