*** Federal Judge vindicates me, and upholds Georgia's revised voter ID law. ***
The Federal Judge, who previously tossed out Georgia's requirement that voters show ID before voting has now approved the revised version, thereby vindicating me. Read the story here.
Opponents of the original bill had argued that the 2005 law violated the Georgia Constitution and amounted to a poll tax and the Judge agreed. Georgia responded by passing another version of the law making voter ID cards, one of several ways to meet the statute's requirements, free and available statewide.
Also, Voters who show up at the polls without a valid ID card will be allowed to cast a provisional ballot, which would be counted if they go to the county registrar's office with ID within two days.
And also, because people have the option to vote absentee without photo identification, said the Judge, they are not barred from participating in elections.
This is a wise move on Georgia's part and an even WISER decision from the Federal Judge.
Last year when this voter ID issue surfaced, I suggested here that "the government should possibly find the funding to issue FREE voter ID cards to those so burdened. This way we can all applaud steps taken to prevent voter fraud, without having references made to Jim Crow's poll taxes."
I'm GLAD to see that the state of Georgia has done just that.
