Todd Hollenback, Democratic candidate for Treasurer, takes issue with opponent's "aim" to abolish office; I issue a challenge to Wheeler.

Hollenbach demonstrates continued need for vital office

FRANKFORT – Todd Hollenbach, Democratic nominee for State Treasurer continues to provide a clear understanding of why he is the only qualified person for the job.
Hollenbach's Republican opponent demonstrates so little understanding of the office for which she's running that she has built her entire platform on one talking point – the abolishment of the office of Treasurer, a move that would only serve to eliminate oversight of crucial statewide services. At the KET Treasurer's debate, Hollenbach's opponent made her lack of knowledge about the office apparent by saying all she believes the Treasurer's office does is print checks.

Hollenbach is easily able to illustrate the flaws in his opponent's belief by pointing out the importance of having an elected State Treasurer, accountable to the people of Kentucky. Along with protecting the state against wasteful government spending, the duties of the office include oversight of essential programs that affect the lives of thousands of Kentucky families such as teachers' retirement, college savings plans and the Kentucky Lottery.
Calling the move to eliminate the office proof of her "fiscal conservatism," Hollenbach's opponent fails to provide evidence that backs up her claim.
"Hearing my opponent describe herself as a fiscal conservative is like listening to Ernie Fletcher say he's going to clean up the mess in Frankfort," Hollenbach said. "Nothing in her track record suggests that she's a fiscal conservative. In fact, while she was the director of the AOC (Administrative Office of the Courts), the annual budget increases far exceeded the total budget of the State Treasurer's office."

In desperation, Hollenbach's opponent adopted the anti-Treasurer talking point late in the primary, only after her candidacy failed to gain traction with the people of Kentucky.

My view? If Mrs. Wheeler is REALLY interested in abolishing the Treasurer's office, she needs to make an IRON-CLAD and judicially enforceable contract with Kentuckians that she will NOT run for the office, if elected, and if she fails in her effort to abolish the office.

When she does that, she will make a believer out of me. Until then, it may very well be another "yada" "yada".
